Oopee Zoncolan goes ROSA!

New year coming with new challenges. The work front is now packed leadership duties in the Sochi Olympic Games, but the great recreational goal will be the cycling adventure in Italy in May.

Old stuff

  • 10/05/2012: Two weeks to the climb. I have done very good winter training comparedto the earlier years and the Tour de France HC-climbs, but Zoncolan is not an average TdF HC.
    Because of my work the training is not consistent, some days good but then a period og hanky panky.
    One big question is the gearing. Contador had 34-32 last year. How could I possibly make the 22 % with heavier gearing than Alberto? Perhaps the pink team clothing gives some boost?
    When the going gets tough...
    At least the Finnish ice hockey team is doing fine at the World Champs. France is being played out totally! There is a taste of gold again, like last year in Bratislava!
  • 03/04/2012:  Winter is still here. Snow, snow, rain - but the sun is here sometimes!
    Well, only 50 days and it is time for The Climb. The Monte Zoncolan. We are in touch with our gearing specialist Jaska the Magician. One of these days we will make an order and get some parts to our bikes.
    Training summary March, 31 days:
    18 * cycling indoor, in average with increasing resistance
    4 * running
    9 * rest
    Must do it better these 50 remaining days.
    One trip to Germany for buying a car, it took some days from proper training.
  • 24/03/2012: Sorry not many personal news. Training takes time;-)
    We try to get some interesting things on our main page: great cyclists and great climbs presentations.
    Today a nice spinning 1 h 30 min, with heavy resistance as always.
  • 01/03/2012: Our noname outfit is designed! Looks good, check it here. The style is not the problem, the climb is. Producing power more than 400 W in the steepest Zoncolan section is not a soft piece of cheesecake.
    My training summary February, 29 days:
    17 * cycling (indoor, always pretty high intensity)
    5 * running (outdoor, always low intensity)
    7 * rest
    Nothing special but good for me.
    Well, 83 days left and it's time for training again, 1 hour spinning with heavy resistance...
  • 14/02/2012: Valentine is a day for good things and happiness. For Team Zoncolan the day has been confusing. Masa Z is calculating the minimum power (W) needed for the climb. Unfortunately, the numbers are not very encouraging. Well, we have to make the old Grandpa' trick and just make the pedals singing.
  • Check here for data from the flat cycling trip in 2011 late autumn weather in Finland. This is the moment where we decided to attack Zoncolan. 
  • First rest day in a long time before spinning again tomorrow morning. Already checking climbs for time after Zoncolan. This one, yet unproven ascent, may go to our list in the future. Already this year we will visit Malcesine!
  • Recovery after Italotrip. Training every day. Mostly spinning. Time is short and the challenge is enormous. Some people do not believe in us, but the 1.000 € Bet gives good motivation.
  • Saturday - Tuesday 04-07/02: Spinning at home and then a trip to Milan,Italy.
    On sunday: Stadio Giuseppe Meazza (San Siro), AC Milan 0 - Napoli 0, spectators: 53.000.
    Zlatan Ibrahimovic earned red after a punch in the penalty area. The Swede was punished with a three days ban from Seria A, including the match against the top team Juventus.
    We also visited our rental car company Camper Valtesse but the place was mid-day closed during our visit.
    A nice car drive up to Clusone, the tiny town where the great twice Giro champion Paolo "Il Falco di Rovetta" Savoldelli comes from. No Paolo around, but his downhill training road was there.
    We also had time enough to visit Venice.

  • Thursday 02/02/2012: same as yesterday. Nice touch and fight!
    In Finland down to -40 C (read MINUS!). Indoor cycling keeps my balls warm though.
    Only one day left to the trip to Italy.
  • Wednesday 01/02/12: 60 minutes furious spinning with tough and cool instructor Elina Riihimäki.
    My four broken ribs (running)  and broken finger (MTB) are finally better.


One second can interrupt a nice training bout. My red Haro just disappeared to the left and I was lying on the tarmac.
My first question: "Masa, is my bike ok?"
I noticed that my glove was not fine, one finger pointing to east. And we were facing north. "F..., there is something wrong with my finger..."
This was a bit sad story just before Xmas. Training with MTB on icy road.
Shit happens. Obviously my other hand was shaking when I took this photo.
The rib-story was another one, one week later. And that was much worse.
Soon back in training again.
